Sportsmanship
One
of the most important things that we can teach our youth athletes is
"Fair Play" and "Sportsmanship!"
Sportsmanship
is a reflection of one’s attitude and manners exhibited toward others,
regardless of the outcome of a game (win or loss).
Qualities of good sportsmanship include showing fairness,
courtesy, and a general characteristic of rational and objective
behavior.
A person who exemplifies good sportsmanship treats everyone with
respect and dignity.
Good sportsmanship is reflected in those individuals who not only
understand the rules as written, but also the honest intent or spirit of
the rule, and the intention to maintain fair play.
Everyone should recognize
that mistakes are made and that youth sports activities are an
opportunity for development of the athlete and the person.

(Recognized

Twinsburg
AC Soccer
was awarded the 2000 "Fairplay League/Club of the Year" award
at the annual OYSAN (Ohio Youth Soccer Association - North) awards
banquet and workshop/seminar held on March 31, 2001. This
award is presented by the state soccer association (OYSAN) to the league
or club which best exemplifies fair play and sportsmanship as an
organization.
At
the OYSAN annual awards banquet held on March 29, 2003, Twinsburg
AC Soccer
was again recognized for its promotion of sportsmanship, and was for the
second time in three years, presented with the state soccer associations
Fair Play and Sportsmanship award for 2002.
There are
89 leagues or clubs, which have direct affiliation with
the OYSAN and many more smaller clubs or rec leagues which affiliate
through these 89 leagues to the OYSAN. Over
55,000 youth players are registered and play soccer in the OYSAN.
Thanks
to all who participate and work hard to promote good sportsmanship in
this great game that the rest of the world calls "futball!"
A
Joke to Think About
The
following joke has been showing up in emails and on youth sports
websites across the country, and drives home the point that parents
should be reminded of the virtue of tolerance. The author of this
joke is unknown, and it can be found in modified forms throughout the
web and applies to all youth athletic activities.
At one point
during a game, the coach called one of his young soccer players aside
and asked, "Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team
is?" The player nodded in the affirmative.
"Do you
understand that what matters is whether we win or lose together as a
team?" The youngster nodded yes.
"So,"
the coach continued, "I'm sure you know, when a foul is called, you
shouldn't argue, curse, attack the referee, or call him a poop-head. Do
you understand all that?" Again the player nodded.
He continued,
"And when I take you out of the game so another player gets a
chance to play, it's not good sportsmanship to call your coach an
‘idiot’ is it?'' Again
the child nodded.
"Good,"
said the coach. "Now go
over there and explain all that to your parents."
